Here are Sadie and Milo in the entryway of my New York apartment. Mimi had just died of cancer. I was painting a mural in a pet store on W. 57th St. in New York and a woman brought two black kittens in to be adopted. She had rescued them from under a vacant building. She and the owner and a customer were talking about how people adopt black cats around Halloween to be sacrified and/or tortured. (This was September) I couldn't bear it and so I joined the conversation and said to the other customer, "I'll take one if you take one." He took a kitten and I took the other.
